Tinubu Meets EFCC Boss Over Disposal of Seized Houses

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, over the management and disposal of houses seized by the anti-graft agency across Nigeria.

The meeting was held at the State House in Abuja, with the Presidency disclosing that discussions focused on ensuring that the management and disposal of the recovered properties are conducted in accordance with principles of transparency and accountability.

The development comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to determine how recovered assets should be managed and put to productive use after being seized or forfeited through investigations and court proceedings.

The meeting is particularly significant given the growing value of properties recovered by the EFCC from individuals and organisations accused of financial crimes. The commission has increasingly relied on asset recovery as an important component of its anti-corruption campaign.

A statement and photographs released by the State House confirmed that Olukoyede and the Housing Minister briefed the President on the management and disposal of seized houses nationwide.

The government’s emphasis on transparency is expected to be important in the disposal of such properties, particularly because recovered assets are public resources once they have been legally forfeited to the state.

The meeting also comes shortly after the controversy surrounding the EFCC’s freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

On August 5, the EFCC obtained a court order freezing the state government’s accounts over an investigation into the alleged handling of about N11 billion in ecology funds, intervention funds and Federation Account allocations. The Osun Government challenged the action in court and accused the commission of conducting a political witch-hunt.

Two days later, President Tinubu directed the EFCC to return to court and seek the vacation of the freezing order. The President said he was concerned not about the commission exercising its legal mandate, but about the timing of the action, which came shortly before the governorship election.

Tinubu warned that federal institutions must not create the impression that they were being used to influence an electoral contest. Governor Ademola Adeleke subsequently won re-election in the August 15 election.

Following his victory, Adeleke announced that he had directed the state Attorney-General to withdraw the suit against the EFCC, expressing appreciation for the President’s intervention.

Tuesday’s meeting therefore represents the first publicly reported engagement between Tinubu and Olukoyede since the President intervened in the Osun accounts controversy.

Beyond the immediate political context, the discussion over seized houses touches on a broader challenge facing Nigeria’s anti-corruption system: how to ensure that assets recovered from corruption investigations are efficiently managed, transparently disposed of and ultimately converted into value for the Nigerian people.

In the past, concerns have been raised over delays, valuation processes and the management of recovered properties. The government’s latest emphasis on transparency and accountability could therefore signal an attempt to strengthen the process.

The Housing Ministry has also previously worked with the EFCC on recovered residential properties. In May 2025, the two institutions inspected a confiscated housing estate containing 753 units recovered from a former Central Bank governor.

The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting is expected to shape the government’s approach to the disposal of seized houses nationwide, with transparency likely to remain a central issue as authorities seek to ensure that recovered assets serve the wider public interest.
