INEC: Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, Delta Bye-Elections Provide Key Lessons for 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the bye-elections conducted in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as important operational tests that will provide lessons for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, stated this on Saturday while monitoring the elections from the commission’s National Situation Room in Abuja. He said the exercises would help the electoral body assess its preparations ahead of the nationwide polls.

The commission conducted four legislative bye-elections across the four states. They included the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and Udu State Constituency in Delta.

Amupitan said the elections should not be treated as routine exercises because each provides an opportunity for INEC to evaluate its systems and identify areas requiring improvement before the 2027 general election.

“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” the INEC chairman said.

He explained that the commission would use the exercises to assess logistics, technological deployment and administrative readiness. According to him, reports from the field were being monitored through the Situation Room to enable officials to respond to emerging challenges.

Amupitan also said operational bottlenecks identified before the elections were addressed, stressing that INEC remained focused on improving efficiency and public confidence in the electoral process.

The development is significant as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 elections, which will involve presidential, governorship and legislative contests across the country. Lessons from smaller electoral exercises can provide operational information for planning a much larger nationwide exercise.

The latest bye-elections follow other off-cycle polls conducted in 2026, including the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections. INEC has previously said such elections provide opportunities to test its electoral systems, logistics and voter-registration processes ahead of the 2027 general election.
