Trump Welcomes Xi as US-China Talks Resume in Washington

United States President Donald Trump on Thursday welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House as the two leaders began a three-day state visit expected to focus on trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and the war involving Iran.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump received Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, during a formal arrival ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, following Trump’s personal reception of the Chinese president at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday.

The airport welcome was unusual diplomatic protocol, with Trump personally travelling to the military base to receive Xi. It was described by Reuters as a rare gesture, highlighting the significance Washington places on the visit.

The visit is Xi’s first trip to Washington in more than a decade and comes several months after Trump visited China in May for talks with the Chinese leader. It is also the second meeting between the two presidents this year.

At the White House ceremony, Trump described his relationship with Xi as a “truly great friendship” and said the two countries had made progress on trade since his visit to China.

Xi, meanwhile, said competition between the United States and China should remain healthy and expressed hope that Chinese companies would receive fair treatment in the United States. He also called for regular communication between the two countries’ militaries to improve crisis prevention.

Trade remains one of the central issues confronting the two governments. Washington and Beijing have agreed to extend an existing trade truce, providing additional time for negotiations and reducing the immediate prospect of a return to broader tariff escalation.

Reuters reported that the truce could be extended into January, although major breakthroughs were not expected from the summit. The two sides continue to disagree over tariffs, technology restrictions and access to critical minerals, particularly rare earth elements that are important to several advanced industries.

Artificial intelligence is also expected to feature prominently in the discussions. Trump said the leaders would discuss security, technology and what he called “super intelligence”, reflecting growing competition between Washington and Beijing over advanced computing and AI development.

The relationship is further complicated by geopolitical disagreements involving Taiwan and Iran. China has maintained economic and diplomatic ties with Iran, while Washington has sought Beijing’s influence on issues surrounding the conflict.

Energy and sanctions could also feature in the discussions. Analysts cited by S&P Global said Trump could seek China’s assistance in ending the Iran conflict, opening Middle Eastern shipping routes and increasing purchases of US oil. However, analysts cautioned that Beijing may not change its energy policies simply in response to US requests.

The summit comes against the background of a broader competition between the world’s two largest economies. Although both governments have sought to prevent their rivalry from escalating into an uncontrolled confrontation, disagreements remain over trade, advanced technology, Taiwan, critical minerals and China’s relationship with countries opposed to US policy.

Xi’s visit also includes a state dinner hosted by Trump and the first lady, with senior officials, business leaders and members of both countries’ delegations expected to attend.

Despite the elaborate diplomatic ceremonies, Reuters reported that expectations for a major agreement remain limited. The immediate focus is instead on maintaining communication, extending the trade truce and managing areas of disagreement between Washington and Beijing.

The outcome of the meetings could nevertheless influence the direction of US-China relations in the coming months, particularly in trade and technology, while providing both governments with an opportunity to address tensions through direct presidential dialogue.
