The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol dispensed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), as part of measures aimed at reducing the impact of high fuel and transportation costs on Nigerians.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed the measure on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during a press briefing in Abuja on petrol prices and subsidy-related issues.
According to Oyedele, the discount will initially run for 30 days, with public transport operators nationwide given priority under the arrangement.
“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide,” the minister said.
Oyedele stressed that the initiative should not be interpreted as a return to the petrol subsidy regime. He explained that the government’s intention was to make the product available at cost during the period.
“It’s not a subsidy; the government is saying we sell to you at a cost,” he said.
The intervention comes amid continued concerns over the effect of petrol prices on transportation, household expenses and business operating costs. Prioritising public transporters could help reduce some pressure on commuters if the savings are reflected in transport fares.
The government also announced plans to negotiate a ceiling of ₦1,350 per litre on petrol’s ex-gantry or landing cost. Oyedele said the proposed mechanism is intended to reduce sharp fluctuations caused by changes in international crude prices and exchange rates.
The latest announcement follows an earlier NNPC Retail promotion that offered customers a ₦66-per-litre petrol discount through the NNPC Fuel App from October 1 to 7.
The new 30-day discount is therefore expected to attract attention from motorists, transport operators and businesses as the government seeks temporary measures to cushion Nigerians from fuel-price pressures while pursuing longer-term efforts to stabilise petrol costs.
