Kaduna Resistance: Tinubu’s Campaign Faces Public Anger

KADUNA, Nigeria — Questions have emerged over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political standing in Kaduna following social media reports of residents expressing opposition to his campaign activities, including a viral video purportedly showing people blocking a road as a campaign convoy approached.

The footage, circulating online, reportedly shows residents chanting “Bamuayi,” a phrase presented in the circulating account as expressing rejection or unwillingness to participate.

The development has triggered debate over the President’s political reception in a state that has endured repeated security challenges, including deadly attacks on rural communities.

Influencer Questions Choice of Kaduna for Campaign Kick-Off

A Kaduna-based social media influencer has raised questions about the reported decision to choose Kaduna as the starting point for Tinubu’s campaign activities, arguing that the choice should be considered against residents’ experiences of insecurity and their expectations of presidential leadership.

The influencer reportedly questioned why the state would be selected for a campaign kick-off when, according to the criticism, the President had not visited affected communities to offer condolences following previous deadly attacks.

The criticism also referenced allegations concerning military air bombardments that reportedly affected rural communities in Kaduna State.

These claims raise important questions about public accountability, the handling of security incidents and the expectations citizens have of political leaders during periods of grief. However, the number of fatalities, the circumstances of the alleged bombardments and the claim concerning the President’s previous visits require independent verification.

Billboard Security Raises Further Questions

Separate reports have claimed that military and police personnel were deployed to protect a billboard bearing Tinubu’s image amid possible opposition from residents.

If confirmed, the reported deployment could prompt questions about security priorities, particularly in a state where communities have repeatedly sought protection against armed groups.

Nevertheless, the reported presence of security personnel around a billboard does not, on its own, establish the scale of opposition to the President or demonstrate that the billboard was at risk of attack.

Can Tinubu Secure a Credible Electoral Mandate?

The reports have also prompted a broader political question: How would public anger, if widespread and confirmed, affect Tinubu’s prospects of securing a credible electoral mandate?

In a democratic system, the answer ultimately depends on voters’ freely expressed choices, not on a single viral video, a reported confrontation or reactions to campaign materials.

A credible election requires more than enthusiastic crowds at campaign rallies. It depends on voters’ freedom to make their choices, impartial electoral administration, transparent counting and the effective protection of political rights.

For Tinubu and other political leaders, public criticism over insecurity and the treatment of affected communities presents an issue of accountability that cannot be settled by social media footage alone.

The reported scenes in Kaduna therefore warrant closer scrutiny, alongside questions about the government’s security record, its engagement with affected communities and the circumstances surrounding the reported protest.

The central issue remains whether residents’ grievances will receive a meaningful response and whether the electoral process will allow Nigerians to express their preferences freely and peacefully..
