“Civility is not weakness”: Peter Obi demands immediate release of Rilwan Olawale

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has demanded the immediate release of Rilwan Olawale, expressing concern over what he described as the continued intimidation and harassment of his supporters across the country.

Obi made the demand in a strongly worded statement condemning the reported arrest of Olawale and calling for transparency, respect for fundamental rights and an end to what he characterised as politically motivated harassment.

The former Anambra State governor also cautioned President Bola Tinubu against actions he believes could undermine Nigeria’s democratic principles, arguing that political competition should be driven by ideas, policies and peaceful engagement rather than intimidation or violence.

“Our campaign is peaceful and issue-driven, focused on offering Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, accountability, justice, and compassion,” Obi stated.

He stressed that his political movement remained committed to peaceful participation and persuasion, insisting that its commitment to civility should not be interpreted as weakness or fear.

“We have chosen the path of peace, not violence; persuasion, not intimidation,” he said, adding that neither he nor his supporters would be intimidated into silence or abandon their demand for a better Nigeria.

Obi further maintained that every Nigerian has the right to support a candidate of their choice without fear of harassment or political victimisation.

He therefore called for clear information regarding the circumstances surrounding Olawale’s arrest, respect for his legal rights and his immediate release.

“No government or political party has the right to deny Nigerians the freedom to support a candidate of their choice,” he declared.

While reaffirming his commitment to peaceful political engagement, Obi said his movement would continue to resist any alleged attempt to undermine democratic rights through lawful means.

“We will remain peaceful but resolute. We will not resort to violence, but we will stand firmly and lawfully against every attempt to undermine our democratic rights,” he stated.

The statement comes amid broader concerns about political tolerance, freedom of expression and the protection of citizens’ rights as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the circumstances surrounding Olawale’s reported arrest, the grounds for his detention and the position of the relevant authorities were not detailed in the statement. Independent confirmation of these details was not provided.

Obi concluded his message with a reaffirmation of his political vision, declaring: “A New Nigeria is POssible and will be OK”.
