Supporters and youths in Benue State reportedly blocked the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday and chanted, “Peter Obi, go back,” as he attempted to visit Yelwata community.
Obi had travelled to Benue to meet families affected by the deadly Yelwata killings. According to the former Anambra State governor, his visit was humanitarian and intended to sympathise with victims rather than engage in political activities.
In a statement, Obi said his convoy was prevented from proceeding to the community by people he described as “thugs.” He said the incident was distressing because he had gone to mourn with families who had lost loved ones.
“Regrettably, our convoy was prevented from proceeding to the community by thugs chanting, ‘Peter Obi, go back,’” Obi said.
He added that he was in Benue “not for partisan politics” but to listen to affected families and offer comfort following the killings.
The incident has generated political controversy, with questions surrounding the circumstances of the blockade and the identities and motivations of those involved. Obi alleged that the obstruction was politically motivated, but that claim has not been independently established.
The development is significant because it comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election. It also highlights the tension that can arise when political figures visit communities affected by insecurity during an increasingly competitive electoral period.
Despite being unable to reach Yelwata, Obi said his thoughts and prayers remained with the victims and their families. He called for Nigerians to reject actions that could deepen political and social divisions.
Peter Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and has since emerged as the NDC’s presidential candidate for 2027. His recent engagements have focused on insecurity, governance and economic challenges, making the Benue incident another notable development in the emerging 2027 political landscape.
