The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to carry out essential repairs and expansion works.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, 2026, FAAN said the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, subject to final confirmation. The authority explained that the intervention is necessary to address deteriorating sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, said the planned rehabilitation would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The project is also expected to include an extension of the runway, which would enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to Nigeria’s South-East region grows.
FAAN said the timing of the work was partly informed by expectations of increased passenger numbers and flight operations during the Christmas travel season. The authority aims to complete the intervention ahead of the anticipated seasonal rush, when many Nigerians travel to their hometowns to celebrate with family and friends.
Passengers planning to fly through Owerri during the proposed closure have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements. FAAN said it would communicate confirmed closure and reopening dates after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The announcement is significant for travellers, businesses and families who rely on the airport for access to Owerri and neighbouring communities. A temporary shutdown could affect travel plans, making early communication from airlines and airport authorities important.
Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport serves as a key aviation gateway to Imo State and surrounding parts of the South-East. The planned runway rehabilitation forms part of broader efforts to maintain aviation safety, improve airport infrastructure and expand capacity to meet growing passenger demand.
