FBI Warns of Security Threats as US Court Reviews Tinubu-Linked Investigation Files

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has raised security concerns over the possible public release of records connected to an old investigation involving President Bola Tinubu.

The bureau told a US federal court that making certain information in the files public could expose individuals associated with the investigation to retaliation, threats and potentially deadly attacks.

The warning was contained in documents submitted to Judge Beryl Howell of the US District Court for the District of Columbia as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking access to records concerning Tinubu.

According to the FBI, some of the material contains identifying information relating to people who either assisted investigations or were connected to criminal matters. The agency argued that revealing such details could place some individuals at risk.

The FBI relied on exemptions under the US Freedom of Information Act that permit authorities to withhold information where disclosure could endanger the physical safety of individuals.

The development follows years of legal efforts by transparency activist Aaron Greenspan to obtain records relating to Tinubu from US government agencies. The documents cover investigations dating back several decades.

The latest court proceedings have attracted considerable attention in Nigeria because of Tinubu’s position as President and the approaching 2027 presidential election.

The records are reportedly linked to a 1993 US case involving allegations of narcotics trafficking and money laundering. During that period, about $460,000 associated with Tinubu was forfeited to the US government. However, available reports indicate that Tinubu was not criminally convicted of drug trafficking in the matter.

Tinubu has denied wrongdoing and has opposed the release of some records, arguing that sensitive information could be used to damage his reputation.

The FBI has now submitted the disputed records to Judge Howell for private review, rather than releasing them directly to the requester. The court will determine what information, if any, can ultimately be made public.

The case has therefore become a significant test of the balance between government transparency, individual privacy and the protection of people connected to sensitive investigations.

Until the court rules on the documents, the FBI’s security concerns do not establish criminal wrongdoing by Tinubu, and the allegations surrounding the historical investigation remain subject to the ongoing legal proceedings.
