Makinde Takes ‘Reset Nigeria’ Message to North-Central

The presidential campaign organisation of the Allied Peoples Movement has taken its “Reset Nigeria” campaign message to Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of its nationwide consultation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The APM presidential candidate and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, attended the North-Central zonal town hall meeting on Monday, where he engaged stakeholders and supporters on issues including governance, security, economic development and the need for stronger public institutions.

The Lafia engagement is part of a series of town hall meetings planned across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones by the Makinde-Lawal Daura presidential campaign organisation. The campaign had earlier announced Katsina as the venue for the North-West meeting, while Lafia was scheduled for the North-Central zone. The South-East meeting is scheduled for Enugu on September 30, while dates for the remaining zones were to be communicated separately.

The campaign described the meetings as citizen-driven platforms intended to enable Nigerians and stakeholders to discuss issues affecting the country and communicate their concerns to the presidential candidate.

Makinde’s “Reset Nigeria” agenda centres on governance, economic productivity, security, education and institutional reforms. At the earlier North-West town hall in Katsina, he outlined proposals including investment in skills and knowledge, addressing the out-of-school children challenge, devolution of some responsibilities to states and reforms aimed at improving governance and service delivery.

The governor has also presented accountability and transparency in the management of public resources as central elements of the campaign’s programme.

Speaking through the campaign organisation, Makinde has said his proposed administration would seek to make leadership more accessible and service-oriented, while giving citizens a greater role in discussions about how government policies are designed and implemented.

The North-Central engagement also forms part of the campaign’s broader grassroots mobilisation strategy. The campaign said the town halls were intended not only to present its policy proposals but also to gather feedback from citizens and stakeholders across different parts of the country.

Makinde’s running mate, Lawal Musa Daura, a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, has featured prominently in the campaign’s zonal engagements. At the Katsina meeting, Daura identified insecurity as one of the major challenges confronting the country and said alternative approaches would be required to reduce violence and improve security.

The campaign has described the North-Central meeting as another step in its consultations ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

The organisation had initially scheduled a South-South town hall in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for September 25, but subsequently postponed the event and said a new date would be communicated. It confirmed that the Lafia meeting would proceed as planned.

The campaign has also pointed to Makinde’s record as governor of Oyo State as part of its case for his presidential candidacy, while presenting the “Reset Nigeria” agenda as a programme aimed at addressing national economic, security and governance challenges.

As political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 election, the APM’s zonal meetings provide a platform for the party to outline its proposals and engage potential voters across the country.

The Lafia town hall is expected to be followed by further consultations in other geopolitical zones as the Makinde-Daura campaign continues its nationwide mobilisation and policy engagement ahead of the election.
